First introduced in the early 1990s, the original SansAmp Classic pedal transformed the world of direct recording and live performance. It gave guitarists and bassists the tube amp warmth and dynamic response they craved—without the need for actual amplifiers. Its distinctive switch-mode design provided detailed control over gain, EQ tone shaping, and cabinet simulation, all in a compact and versatile unit.
This is the very pedal Kurt Cobain famously used during the recording of In Utero, dialing in aggressive guitar tones straight from the recording console. At the same time, producer Tchad Blake incorporated the Classic pedal into his drum recording setup routing kick and bass mics through it to add grit, low-end punch, and harmonic coloration. The result became a defining element of his sound.
