About Software Xfer Records Serum 2
Serum was built around a simple frustration: Xfer’s Steve Duda wanted a wavetable synth that didn’t exist yet, one with genuinely high-quality sound paired with a visual, creative workflow that made sound design feel fun instead of tedious. Serum 2 carries that same mission forward, keeping the legendary wavetable oscillator at the center while expanding nearly everything around it.
It’s built for sound designers and producers across pretty much every electronic genre, from the kind of user who just wants a reliable lead or bass patch to the kind who wants to import, morph, and manipulate wavetables in real time from scratch. The wavetable oscillator itself has been refined with more flexibility, and you can create or import your own wavetables from multisample recordings using the open, human-readable SFZ format.
The workflow centers on visual, hands-on sound shaping: flexible effect routing lets you chain and reorder processing however you want, a built-in arpeggiator and clip sequencer add rhythmic and melodic movement without external tools, and the matrix-based modulation system makes routing modulation sources to targets fast and visual instead of buried in menus. Serum 2 expands on all of it, more oscillator types, deeper modulation tools, and an expanded effects section, while keeping the sound engine and browser workflow that made the original a standard in the first place.
Version 2.1.5, released July 6, 2026, is a genuinely feature-rich point update. It adds a “restore locks when host sets state” preference, a “show in matrix” option on the modulation right-click menu, mono-to-stereo support for Serum 2’s FX, a sustain-pedal option for the limit-same-note-poly-to-1 setting, and shift-key support for fine adjustments on matrix amount and output sliders. On the fix side: arpeggiator notes cutting out when transport position jumps with BPM sync enabled, a crash when loading Convolve FX with impulse responses under 256 samples, and macro values not updating properly at note-on when using XYZ-to-macro mapping, among several other stability fixes.
